Polish women told to go to U.K. for free abortions
STRICT LAW AT HOME
BY MATTHEW DAY

WARSAW * Polish women are being encouraged to travel to Britain for free abortions provided by Britain's National Health Service as a way of avoiding strict laws prohibiting the procedure in their home country.
Posters and flyers distributed by a pro-abortion group show a woman in her underwear with the words "my choice" scrawled on her stomach in English. Around her are words mimicking the style of a Mastercard advertising campaign. "Plane ticket to England at special offer - 300 zloty [$108]", it reads. "Accommodation - 240 zloty [$86]. Abortion in a public clinic - 0 zloty."
It adds: "Relief after a procedure carried out in decent conditions - priceless." At the food of the poster is the slogan: "For everything, you pay less than an underground abortion in Poland."
The campaign, by SROM, a feminist organization, was criticized yesterday for promoting "abortion tourism."
The Polish Federation for Women and Family Planning estimates that each year thousands of women denied an abortion in the Roman Catholic country travel to Britain, which has a reciprocal agreement with Poland for the provision of free medical care under EU regulations. "When the Abortion Act was liberalized I said it would turn Britain into the abortion capital of Europe and that seems to be exactly what's happened. The laws here are far, far too lax," said Ann Widdecombe, a Conservative MP.
Kevin Barron, the Labour chairman of the House of Commons health select committee, added: "The NHS should certainly not be funding [abortions] for Polish women. "This would be against all the regulations and if a woman who is not British attempted to get a termination here I would hope they would be turned away. I have heard that many women from southern Ireland come here for that purpose, but to my knowledge it is to visit private clinics and not the NHS."
Joyce Robins, co-director of Patient Concern, said: "When you consider the mess the NHS is in at the moment we can't afford to treat the people who have been paying into it all their lives, let alone women from abroad who want to use it to get rid of unwanted pregnancies."
Abortion tourism is common among women from Ireland and Northern Ireland where it is illegal to have the procedure. An estimated 7,000 women a year travel from there to England to have a termination, either in a private clinic or on the NHS.
Marie Stopes, the sexual health specialists, even offers reduced fees for Irish women in recognition of the travel expenses they face. A spokesman from the Department of Health stressed that it would be very difficult to get a non-emergency procedure such as an aabortion at the NHS if the patient were not a U.K. citizen.
