COLONOSCOPY/GASTROSCOPY

During a colonoscopic procedure a flexible fibreoptic rubber tube is inserted into your rectum and bowel to enable your physician to directly examine the large bowel (Colon). If necessary, polyps can be removed and biopsies obtained. Best results are achieved if the bowel has been completely emptied by the use of laxative and ingestion of only a liquid diet for 24 hours before the procedure.

Colonoscopy is uncomfortable for some patients because air is introduced into the bowel through the rectum and may cause abdominal distension and discomfort. For this reason, pre-medication with Propofol is given intravenously.

Colonoscopy takes approximately 20 minutes to perform. You may need 1 hour to sleep in the Endoscopy Unit after the procedure before feeling ready to leave. You should arrange for someone to meet with you to take you home. You MUST NOT drive yourself because there is the possibility that the medications received may decrease your reflexes for awhile after the procedure.
