Man stumbles onto $6M in pot

A man walking through a thicket of trees yesterday afternoon in Scarborough discovered a marijuana grow operation estimated to be worth about $6 million on the streets.
The grow-op with mature plants had been seeded in six areas on McLevin Ave., just east of Markham Rd.
Each plant had its own green bamboo guide stick to hold it straight. Police estimate about 6,000 plants were growing in the wooded area between a large furniture store and industrial complex.
A dense band of trees and bush surrounded the grow operations and were not visible from neighbouring parking lots or the CP Rail line on the north edge of the area.
As of last night, police had cleared only about a fifth of the harvest and will continue cutting down the plants this morning. Police said the scheme was well-planned.
The operation was hiding in plain sight. Duty Insp. Gord Jones said, adding it "is a substantial find." He said there have been no arrests and police don't have suspects.
Mario Morra, who has lived in the area for 23 years, said he's surprised by the find. "It's close to home," he said. "It's always been bush since I've lived around this neighbourhood. "This is a first in this area," Morra said (TORONTO SUN, Monday, September 11, 2006).

McGuinty denies mudslinging
NDP candidate Cheri DiNovo says Liberal criticism of her sermons is an "attack" on her integrity, family and position as a United Church minister.
"It's an attack on my faith," DiNovo said yesterday. Voters in Parkdale-High Park head to the polls tomorrow to choose a successor to Gerard Kennedy, who resigned to run for the Liberals' federal leadership.
Liberal candidate Sylvia Watson's campaign issued a press release this week that questioned DiNovo's "values," quoting from a sermon posted online that compares the media's treatment of Karla Homolka to the persecution of Jesus Christ.
A second Liberal press release yesterday demands that DiNovo "come clean" on her public acknowledgement of drug involvement in her youth, and her published comment that pedophiles and axe murderers could be baptized or ordained "if the request comes from God."
DiNovo said the Liberals are taking her comments out of context, attempting to "besmirch" her record as a community activist, businesswoman and reverend.
Premier Dalton McGuinty insisted yesterday that his party is running on its record in government, but he did not apologize for or retract the accusations against DiNovo.
The premier did dispute previously published allegations that a member of his staff had handed out the first press release to reporters. A spokesman for McGuinty said that a female staff member took an afternoon off to help with Watson's campaign, but did not hand out the press release. Instead, the staffer helped organize the media scrum where Education Minister Sandra Pupatello lambasted DiNovo.

Dla rownowagi politycznej powinnismy wybrac liberalke, pania Sylvie Watson. Za duzo wladzy w rekach jednej mysli politycznej nic dobrego nie wrozy. Socjalisci z NDP maja tylko jeden dobry punkt w swoim programie - legalizacje marihuany. Ale to nie powod aby na nich glosowac. Wycofanie wojsk kanadyjskich z Afganistanu i niedopuszczenie prywatnej sluzby zdrowia juz eliminuje ich z mojego poparcia. A to, ze pani Cheri DiNovo jest ksiedzem w Zjednoczonym Kosciele i ostro zazywala LSD za mlodu, nie powinno miec nic wspolnego z podjeciem dezyzji przy urnie. Dlatego Liberalowie uzywajac tych blotnych a la amerykanskich argumentow w kampanii wyborczej moga sobie strzelic w oko. Jak to juz raz swoja arogancka postawa zalatwili zwyciestwo socjalistce Peggy Nash w parlamencie federalnym. Obym sie mylil. Ale do zobaczenia przy urnie jutro.
