Pot bust nets rifle

Durham Region police seized 60 lbs. of marijuana and an assault rifle after executing three search warrants in the city's north end.
A search of three properties revealed an indoor marijuana grow operation, an AR 15 assault rifle and 80 plants in the seedling stage. All items were valued in excess of $275,000.
Ryan Roy, 24, John Kerrigan, 70, and Darren Kerrigan, 47, all of Uxbridge, and Jeffrey MacDonald, 24, of Brock face a slew of charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking. 'Unbelievable' use of power, Walesa says of former allies

WARSAW * Lech Walesa, the "father of Polish democracy," accused the country's ruling Kaczynski twins yesterday of perverting his political legacy and called for their Law and Justice party to be ousted in elections tomorrow.

"I am unhappy with the way things have developed," he said. "What the Kaczynskis are doing now, the way they are using power is unbelievable. It's terrible."

Mr. Walesa led the Solidarity workers' revolt against Poland's communist regime in the 1980s and went on to become the country's president after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

He accused Lech, the President, and Jaroslaw, the Prime Minister, of using Cold War tactics to maintain power. "They threaten people. They tap phones. It's not correct," said the 64-year-old, before urging fellow Poles to flock to the ballot boxes tomorrow.

His condemnation comes even though he and the twins once fought side by side as members of Solidarity. When Mr. Walesa, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, was elected president the Kaczynskis were members of his Cabinet.

But bad blood quickly poisoned their partnership, and the Walesa and Kaczynski families are now fiercely at odds. Jaroslaw, Mr. Walesa's son, is now running as a candidate for Civic Platform.

"It all started with a joke," the younger Mr. Walesa said this year. Although he would not say what upset them, the joke is widely known to be a politically incorrect story of two brothers who arrive at a party, one with his wife and one with his "husband."

For the homophobic Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who has suggested gay people should not be allowed to be teachers, but is unmarried and lives with his cat and his mother, the "joke" proved unfunny enough to fuel a lifelong animosity against Poland's political icon.
