W E L C O M E

Welcome my friends, to the O'Cannabiz Conference and Expo. And welcome to the end of cannabis prohibition and the birth of a bona fide new industry.

Nearly a half-century ago, a Canadian prime minister named Trudeau appointed a commission on the non-medical use of drugs. The Le Dain Commission concluded that marijuana should be decriminalized for both simple possession and cultivation for personal use. And there is sat-through a war on drugs that criminalized millions of citizens, and wasted billions of dollars on enforcement and incarceration.

Now, a new millennium brings us another Canadian prime minister named Trudeau, one who ran on a campaign promise to legalize marijuana, and who is on the verge of realizing the aims of his father's far-sighted commission.

This dovetail with state-after-stare in the U.S. finally legalizing the "demon weed" and turning a net loss into a revenue source and economic driver.

The legislative aspect of cannabis acceptance is just the beginning. In many ways, the public itself has led the way in that process, in the public square and at the ballot box. Whether for medical purposes, or for recreational use by responsible adults, the normalization of cannabis has been swift.

O'Cannabiz is where the conversation goes from here. We have representation from doctors, dispensaries and the original licensed medical marijuana growers who tested the waters of legalization amid registration. The health issues, the business issues and the social issues are all on offer.

And we have the stars of the nascent cannabis industry, from the entrepreneurs to celebrity investors like Melissa Etheridge to resisters and disruptors for the cause, like Jodie Emery. There are many reasons to attend O'Cannabiz, and we have them all covered. The fear-mongering is over and the future is here.
