The sleeper cell in Canada was caught after the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS), was provided with a great deal of intelligence from the Echelon system. Analysts monitoring Internet traffic associated with al-Qaida, soon focused their attention on various chat rooms - including the one frequented by Siddique. Within weeks a Canadian-based terror gang had been exposed. CSIS surveilled the primary members and sought to identify others associated with the gang. After further investigation, the true ambition of al-Qaida became clear - its operatives would storm the Canadian Broadcast Centre and Parliament Building simultaneously. A series of truck bombs (ammonium nitrate) would kill hundreds of civilians in various shipping centres to mark the beginning of the assault. Ultimately, the gang intended to demand that Canada withdraw its force of 2,300 troops from Afghanistan, or it would behead Stephen Harper - Canada's Prime Minister ("Lured by the 'Gue Fawkes gang recruiter'", EYE SPY, Vol. VII No. 51 2007).

Specialists say the health care system must do a much better job of caring for hepatitis C patients if it is to slow the onslaught of serious liver-damage cases. While an estimated 250,000 Canadians - close to 1% of the population - are infected with the virus, only about 20,000 have been treated with drugs that can cure many of them. About one-third are infected and do not even know it, esperts say.
"A quarter-million people have hepatitis C, and we don't have a game plan," said Dr. Kevork Peltekian, chairman of the Canadian Liver Foundation...
First identified in 1989, hepatitis C causes inflammation that can lead to cirrhosis of the liver - dangerous scarring of the organ - or liver cancer, though patients often go symptomless for 20 years or more...
Health care is currently dealing mostly with people who were infected in the 1960s and 1970s and are now suffering serious complications, Dr. Myers said...
The result is that "$2-billion has been spent on 15% of the patients with hepatitis C, and very little of it was spent on medical services," Dr. Sherman said (Tom Blackwell, "Hepatitis C a 'giant' that sleeps no longer. Study finds incidence of illness soaring", NATIONAL POST, Monday, May 5, 2008).

MILITARY HONOUR
Harry awarded service medal for shortened Afghanistan service
Britain's Prince Harry was awarded a military service medal yesterday for 10 weeks of frontline service in Afghanistan. The 23-year-old served in Helmand, southern Afghanistan, with other members of his Household Cavalry Regiment last winter, but was flown home in February when a media blackout collapsed, sparkling fears he would become a prime target for pro-Taliban insurgents. Yesterday, the Prince took part in a march with 160 soldiers from his regiment through the streets of Windsor, where the royal family has a castle and the regiment is headquartered. The troops were presented with the Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan by his aunt, Princess Anne. Prince Harry secretly flew to Helmand in mid-December 2007 to work as a forward air controller, calling in air strikes on Taliban positions. Reuters (NATIONAL POST, Tuesday, May 6, 2008).
