When trying to set up an interview with Tommy Chong, it's best not to pencil in a date and time.

Chong - whose stoner flicks with longtime pal Cheech Martin earned the notorious pipe-toting duo international fame - admits he can't remember those kinds of details. That said, he's good at returning calls. Chong, after all, has some things to say. His time behind bars combined with the feeling that he's since been living under a microscope post-prison has the Canadian-born comic fired up.
In 2003, an elaborate crackdown called Operation Pipe Dreams landed Chong in the joint for selling novelty bongs online. While life on the inside was somewhat hellish (what with the skinny metal bunk, a barely-there blanket and the roaring snores of some 200-plus prisoners) Chong still managed to do what he does best - have a good time.
"When I went to jail, everybody was my fan - the cops, the guards, even the warden," he says.
"They had a Tommy Chong rule that no guards were allowed to approach me for an autograph, but I ended up posing with all of them for photographs." Chong, who ended probation on July 5, says the experience was worth it. "I dold myself 'You're here for a reason," he recalls.
That purpose is to push for the decriminalization of marijuana. "No one, as far as I know, has ever put marijuana on trial," he says. Meanwhile, Chong is also keeping busy on the entertainment front. Cheech and Chong plan to reunite, possibly for a stage version of the stoner comedy, Up in Smoke.
"We're like grumpy old stoners," says Chong. Chong also returns to the new season of That '70s Show with his pot smoking character, Leo. "I am embarrassed when I get my paycheque," he says of the gig.

Yes, Sergeant Stedenko finally busted Tommy Chong. But it wasn't a kilo of Maui Wowie that took him down, or even a van made entirely of marijuana. In early 2003, the stoner comedy icon was charged for manufacturing bongs. That's right! Bongs, man! Josh Gilbert's funny, breezy doc follows the case for some two years, exposing the absurdity of U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft's revived war on drugs, while growing into a charming profile of the Canadian half of the comedy duo Cheech and Chong.
Born in Edmonton, Chong hooked up with Cheech Martin in a hippie burlesque show Chong organized at his father's Vancouver strip club. Inspired by Lenny Bruce, the duo's brand of fried humour crystallized into a highly successful act, producing a string of albums and movies that parodied pot culture.
So maybe it was only a matter of time before the DEA called upon the Chong residence, but the pound of marijuana they found there was incidental. They had already made a dramatic raid on the glass factory operated by Tommy's son, Paris. Under Operation Pipe Dreams - a radiculous attempt to clamp down on the drug paraphernalia industry - a total of fifty-five individuals were indicted on federal charges.
Chong was the big catch, receiving a nine-month prison sentence - the harshest punishment in the operation. In the sentencing memorandum, prosecutors cited Chong's movies as "glamorizing the illegal use and distribution of marijuana and trivializing law-enforcement efforts to combat drug use." He was charged with selling bongs, but Tommy Chong seems to have ultimately gone to jail for making 1978's Up in Smoke.
With the Bush administration recently applying a strange dose of stoner logic (smoking dope = supporting terrorism) to their war on drugs, a/k/a/ Tommy Chong offers a timely reminder of the assault on civil liberties currently being endured by American citizens. Welcome home, Tommy.

A MOTHER'S refusal to let firefighters check a carbon monoxide alarm in her Scarborough home because it would wake her child led a dope bust yesterday. The fire crews called cops who discovered a marijuana plantation - but no babies. Six people were arrested on Newdawn Cr. (TORONTO SUN, Thursday, September 8, 2005).

Weed seed buyers beware

That notice you got in the mail may be part of a DEA sting By MATT MERNACH

THE PRO-POT MOVEMENT MAY HAVE been freaked by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) nabbing of Canuck marijuana seed entrepreneur Marc Emery, but inhale deeply - the worst may be yet to come.
What exactly is the DEA busy with here? The DEA denies it, but suspicious pot activists suggest it's planning a mass roundup of Emery's buyers.
Some of Emery's customers were stunned recently to receive a letter purportedly seeking support money for Emery's defence fund. "Smoke for freedom of choice! Smoke for our leader! Overgrow the government! reads the notice, which asks for an additional $50 to fill seed orders and stipulates that donations be sent via money order through Wal-Mart or Western Union - both of which require I.D. It's from info given at the money-order stage that pot activists contend the DEA is amassing its hit list.
According to Emery, notices have turned up in 16 U.S. states, seven provinces and territories, as well as New Zealand and Australia. The notice's request for cash to fill orders is curious given the fact that Emery's seed business has been shut down and the DEA has confiscated all his inventory.
Emery, who swears he has never kept a client list, in order to protect the privacy of his clients, insists this suspicious missive was not sent by him or anyone he knows. He has posted the oddly worded flyer on his Cannabis Culture website, warning recipients not to respond to it.
Emery's sure it's the work of the DEA. He says info the DEA has so far disclosed to his lawyer, John Conroy, indicates that its agents scanned both the incoming and outgoing mail for his seed operation in the weeks prior to his arrest on July 29. Emery says more than 60 people have notified him that they got the letter in the mail starting August 5.
"They want to get us all," Emery says. Josh Williams, a quadriplegic from London, Ontario, received seeds from Emery based on his Health Canada exemption. Then came the mysterious notice.
"It would have been the Wednesday after the arrest," Williams says. "I just thought it was odd. I didn't pay for the seeds, and it was asking for money to get them. This seemed weird and suspicious." Williams goes on: "The writing - 'Smoke for our leader' - that's nothing Marc or someone who writes for him would say. It doesn't sound like Emery at all. 'Use code names. Go to Wal-Mart. Use Western Union.' That's not Marc either.
"I'm worried that someone has my address now and they know what I do. It's an invasion of privacy." Spokespeople with neither the DEA nor the U.S Department of Justice in Seattle, Washington, could - or would - shed any light on this caper.
Ditto for RCMP spokesperson Paul Marsh, who refers all questions on the matter to Foreign Affairs in Ottawa, which did not return calls. Seattle-based prosecutor Todd Greenberg is a little more forthcoming. "They're trying to make people angry against their government and the U.S. government," he says of the alleged DEA sting, before saying there could be further arrests.
Ian Hillman at the U.S. Consulate in Vancouver, suggests just how large the Emery probe has become, saying, "This nearly involves every state. There are aspects of the investigation where it's not in our interest to reveal how many people are working on it [But] I understand it involves dozens of people on both sides of the border."
By most accounts, it looks like Emery and two others indicted with him by a Seattle grand jury on May 26 for marijuana seed distribution, marijuana distribution and money laundering are in for an extended judicial adventure.
"This case raises a plethora of unique defences," say prominent Philadelphia lawyer Theodore Simon. A favourite as a talking head on intricate international cases on CourtTV, Simon declares that "it is the law of the requested country [Canada] that prevails in all extradition cases, not the requesting country's [U.S.].
"Does Canada extradite if the action is wholly lawful there? It's the governing laws of Canada that will decide." In a case similar to the Prince of Pot's the noted lawyer used a lack-of-knowledge defence to win after Canada sought to extradite an American who sold furniture using a "going out of business sale" gimmick.
Simon says, "Canada has strict laws governing that type of activity [false going-out-of-biz marketing], while it's much looser in the U.S. The law of the U.S. governed his action, and the fellow was unaware that the law is strict in Canada. We prevailed."
He asks, "How will the courts of Canada determine whether Emery knew where [his product] was going? With that type of defence, a person may be protected from extradition.'
A court would have to determine, he says, what the conversation was like between the Drug Enforcement Administration agents posing as customers and Emery. "If they said they wanted to buy seeds and bring them back to Arkansas and he engaged them by saying, 'Do it, Little Rock,' then that's evidence that he or his staff knew the seeds were going to the U.S."
The American lawyer is amazed that Emery continues with his defiant admission that he sold south. Says Emery, with deliberation but quieter than usual: "I've made plenty of American seeds sales and given them away to California med growers and in all the med users' states.
"The last ad Marc Emery Seeds Direct took out was in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. The ad ran June 22 advertising our med pack. Very affordable. Our ad is next to an ad for free med grass consultations. There are 150 seed sellers in California alone."
But U.S. National Association of Criminal Lawyers spokesperson Jack King thinks the DEA may have jurisdictional issues to contend with once the matter gets to court. "Were does the DEA get jurisdiction to operate in Canada? Under the piracy clause in the U.S. Constitution? That's for the high seas. Last I looked, BC was known for its soil. "In one respect," he addes, "this is just another trade dispute with Canada" (NOW, September 8-14 2005).

Pushed off America's front pages last week by the destructiveness of Hurricane Katrina was a hopeful and inspiring event in the beautiful Baltic city of Gdansk.
Outwardly it was merely inspiring - the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Solidarity's success in forcing Poland's then-communist government to legalize it as the first independent labour union in Soviet-controlled eastern Europe. At the time the communists tried to claim that the deal was an equal compromise by both sides. But when Lech Walesa, an unemployed electrician who had conducted the negotiations with great skill and signed the deal, went outside to be greeted with a wave of cheers by the striking workers of the Lenin shipyard, it was clear that Polish (and Soviet) communism had suffered a serious defeat.
That defeat did not mark the end of Polish communism. Solidarity had to endure many setbacks - notably, the brutal imposition of martial law a year later - before the Polish communists were finally defeated in 1989, the Berlin Wall came down and the entire Soviet empire unravelled, reaching its triumphant conclusion in 1991 when Lech Walesa was elected the first non-communist president in Poland since the Second World War.
On Aug. 30, 1980, however, the writing was on the wall - and the wall was the Lenin shipyard. Walesa was back there last Tuesday and Wednesday attending the various conferences that marked the anniversary. Accompanying him were heroes of that period from other countries, notably Czech dissident and writer, Vaclav Havel.
But Gdansk was not merely an exercise in nostalgia. It was also a forward-looking and hopeful event in two respects. In the first instance, representatives were present from freedom movements in the Middle East, Asia and Zimbabwe that have still to establish democratic government in their own countries. Harry Wu from China, for instance, electrified the conference held by the New Atlantic Initiative with a talk on the Chinese gulag and what he calls the Chinese government's doctrine of "classicide."
These new dissidents, especially those from authoritarian countries in the Middle East, conveyed a sense that powerful ideological currents were moving their regions in a democratic direction - and that the official U.S. government support for extending liberty was one of them.
Contrary to much condescending opinion in Europe and on the anti-war U.S. left, however, no one - neither the Mideast and Asian democrats nor the U.S. diplomats present - thought that this process would be either short or painless, or without setbacks.
An especially significant moment occurred when a young Vietnamese woman asked if the U.S. government would continue to press for democracy if it hoped to gain some benefit, bases for instance, from an authoritarian government. The most senior U.S. official present, a high-ranking member of the National Security Council, gave a very honest reply. The U.S. government, he said, would sometimes appear inconsistent because it had many interests in world politics and, inevitably, these were often in conflict. When that happened, the freedom dissidents should hold America to its promises. It might be an important factor in ensuring that Washington reached the right decision.
And at least the U.S. was present to listen to these dissident voices both last week and 25 years ago. Western Europeans were not very visible in Gdansk, except for a few senior officials like the British Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, to hear the developing debate over liberty and human rights. It was almost as if they are perfectly comfortable with authoritarian regimes and have therefore decided not to notice that there is a developing resistance to them.
That was even more striking in relation to the second hopeful sign in Gdansk - namely, the gradual shaping of a de facto alliance between Poland, Ukraine and U.S. to resist any Russian attempt by President Vladimir Putin to revive a sort of "Unholy Alliance" of authoritarian states such as Belarus in the region under his leadership.
Hence, one of the most popular political leaders in Gdansk was President Yuschenko of Ukraine, whose pock-marked face advertises the risks that he has taken by resisting Russian dominance.
Today the Poles are made still more nervous by the agreement between Putin and Chancellor Schroeder of Germany, due to be signed on Thursday, to run a natural gas pipeling between the two countries that avoids going through Poland - and so means that the Russians can cut Poland off from such supplies without cutting off Germany. Naturally, this revives ominous memories of previous Russo-German co-operation. But it also heightens the already rising anxiety of Poles that Russia intends to use energy - its main remaining weapon in geopolitics - to exert control over its neighbours and former satellites.
Most West European leaders are themselves anxious not to notice this threat. If they did, they might have to do something about it. And they would much prefer to maintain cozy relations with Putin's Russia with a good conscience.
Hence Poles and Ukrainians want the United States to remain in their locality. Only if the U.S. is there to help them resist Russia's energy imperialism are the West Europeans likely to eventually roll up to back them. Not unlike 25 years ago, in fact.

Mianem SPYWARE okresla sie programy, ktore instaluja sie na naszych komputerach, czesto bez naszej wiedzy, i maja na celu przesylanie informacji na nasz temat do terminali, z ktorych pochodza.

W poprzednim numerze pisalismy o tym, w jaki sposob i jak czesto to my sami przyzwalamy na instalowanie sie spyware nie czytajac dokladnie malego druczku przy instalowaniu innych programow lub machinalnie zgadzajac sie na instalacje programow, ktorych nie znamy. W ten sposob, za pozwoleniem uzytkownika, spyware przechodzi przez nasze zapory ogniowe (firewalls) oraz pokonuje programy antywirusowe praktycznie bez walki.
Spyware jest najczesciej uzywany w celach komercyjnych - pomaga innym zdobyc informacje na temat naszych preferencji, przyzwyczajen i zamilowan. Istnieje rowniez bardziej niebezpieczna forma spyware. Sa to programy, ktore zapamietuja nasze uderzenia w klawiaturke komputera, co praktycznie oznacza, ze wysylaja do swojego wlasciciela informacje o stronach, ktore odwiedzamy oraz jakie hasla, czy numery kart wpisujemy na poszczegolnych stronach.

Jakie symptomy moga sugerowac, ze do naszego komputera wkradl sie spyware?
- Ustawiczne wyskakuja ogloszenia (pop-ups), szczegolnie zaraz po uruchomieniu komputera lub w czasie, gdy nie jestesmy podlaczeni do Internetu.
- Do folderu "Ulubione" nieoczekiwanie sa dodawane niechciane adresy stron sieci.
- Ustawienia (settings) w komputerze same sie zmieniaja i nie mozemy wrocic do poprzednich ustawien - szczegolnie dotyczy to glownej strony Twojego Internetu (homepage), ktora moze automatycznie zmieniac sie na strone, ktorej nie znasz i nie chcesz widziec.

Programow typu spyware przewaznie nie da sie latwo usunac. Bywa, ze nawet jesli wydaje nam sie, ze je zlokalizowalismy i odinstalowalismy, spyware pojawia sie po ponownym uruchomieniu komputera. Istnieja specjalne narzedzia oferowane przez reputowane firmy, ktore pomagaja w usuwaniu spyware.
Rowniez niektore ISP (Internet Service Providers) oferuja programy typu anti-spyware. Nalezy jednak pamietac, ze jesli spyware bylo dolaczone do jakiegos programu, ktory zainstalowalismy, bo byl nam akurat potrzebny, usuwajac spyware, nie bedziemy mogli wiecej uzywac tego programu.

Jak chronic sie przed spyware?
1. Wprowadzic najnowsze zmiany (updates) do Twojego systemu operacyjnego.

- czytaj dokladnie wszystkie ostrzezenia, licencje, i privacy statements, dotyczace programu, ktory sciagasz przez Internet,
- jezeli wyskoczy Ci okienko typu "pop-up", nigdy nie kliknij na "agree", ani na "OK". Zeby zamknac okienko kliknij na "x" w prawym gornym rogu lub nacisnij ALT + F4,
- badz swiadom tego, ze niektore popularne programy oferujace darmowa muzyke lub tak zwane "movie file-sharing" moga miec dolaczone spyware.
3. Upewnij sie, ze Twoj Internet (na przyklad Internet Explorer) ustawiony jest na srednie do maksymalnego bezpieczenstwa (security).
4. Uzywaj firewalls - pewna ilosc programow typu spyware przy pomocy hakerow moze probowac przedostac sie bezposrednio przez Internet do Twojego komputera.
5. Zainstaluj program anti-spyware.

I jeszcze jedno ostrzezenie: programy typu instant messaging nie sa automatycznie filtrowane w celu wykrycia plikow typu .exe (executable). Jesli udostepnicie Panstwo swoje komputery pociechom, zapewne instant messaging jest jedna z funkcji, ktora interesuje ich najbardziej. Poinstruujcie dzieci, aby nie otwieraly zalacznikow wysylanych ta droga.

W sposob niezamierzony stalismy sie calkowicie dobrowolnymi ekshibicjonistami.

Witkacy - filozof, artysta, dramaturg, ktory eksperymentowal i tworzyl na dragach, popelnia symboliczne samobojstwo. Dwa totalitaryzmy to za duzo nawet na jego wyobraznie.

The history of the posthumous reception of Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz's oeuvre reveals an astonishing paradox. The man who in the West has earned the name of the "genie multiple de Pologne," who in the world at large has won a host of followers and admirers, whose name, and in particular his pseudonym, Witkacy, has theoretically entered universal consciousness as belonging to one of the most illustrious twentieth century artists - in his own country this man to all intents and purposes remains still almost completely unknown and in any case certainly misunderstood and underestimated.
On the day of the outbreak of war he reported at a recruitment point but due to his age and state of health he was not drafted. On September 5, accompanied by Czeslawa Okninska, he departed from Warsaw in the wave of refugees proceeding east. In mid-September, suffering from serious depression, he reached the village of Jeziory in Polesie. On September 18, on hearing the news that the Red Army had crossed the Polish border, he committed suicide (Anna Micinska, "WITKACY Life and Work", Interpress Publishers, Warsaw 1990).

The crusading demagogue Dr. A. E. Fossier resuscitated the myth of the hashishin Assassins in the New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal in 1931.

Canadian suffragette and feminist Emily Murphy led a successful campaign to warn the public of the dangers of marijuana, in an effort to protect the white race from the "yellow menace," that were Asian Canadians. Murphy, a member of the highly racist Irish Orange Order, thought that use of "dope" was a ploy by Asian Canadians to gain control of society by getting good innocent 'whites,' hooked on "dope" (Murphy, Emily. The Black Candle. Toronto: Coles Publishing Company, 1973) - and we build statues in her honour! In the book, marijuana users were said to go completely insane after smoking the drug, "liable to kill or indulge in any form of violence to other persons, using the most savage methods of cruelty." In reply to Murphy's popular efforts, Parliament outlawed marijuana, without any debate, in 1923.

An unqualified apology

The following is a message posted yesterday by B.C. marijuana activist Marc Emery on the Cannabis Culture Web site. Mr. Emery is facing extradition to the United States on charges of selling marijuana seeds to Americans.

When I was in jail, I was immersed in a lot of reading. I was studying forced sterilizations in Alberta, the Nazi regime in Germany, all these books and pamphlets on Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. I was surrounded by natives and attending their sweats. I was forced to work cleaning toilets and conducting janitorial duties for my jailers (I cleaned and maintained the main administration building) for many weeks as part of my time there.
Under these circumstances, a person like me can get intemperate. And in a commentary about Canada's Minister of Justice Irwing Cotler, I referred to him derisively, incorrectly and inappropriately as a "Nazi." And I dragged his ancestry as a Jewish person into it; it ended up seeming very unkind to the Minister.
This bothers me now on two levels, because I have always loved and held the highest regard for Jewish culture. In my younger days, I documented the tragic and remarkable story of a dear Polish woman and her survival through the death camps of eastern Poland. So many of my great heroes are Jewish: Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman, my dear friend Alan Young. I feel ashamed when my Jewish friends tell me they are ill at ease with my using the terms "Nazi" or "Holocaust" when referring to this issue or incident. That saddens me. It's one thing to have an angry unsophisticated outburst at a politician I've never met, but when some of my respected friends feel uneasy, that resonates inside. So I apologize to my friends who are upset with my language and comparisons.
I apologize to Mr. Cotler, too. He has a magnificent body of accomplishments as a human rights lawyer and activist, and a man is not to be judged by one action out of the context of his whole life's work. He in no way deserves to have this kind of remark hurled at him in the media.
By the way, no one asked me to say this. I got two e-mails saying I should apologize, not many, but some people I respect just helped me see that it doesn't get us anywhere to inflame people's passions with abusive or offending words.
A resentful tone from jail is one thing, but I should have retracted it when I got out and set the record straight. I was wrong and I hope people accept my apology ("Informent Sources", NATIONAL POST, Thursday, September 1, 2005).

'NAZI' REMARK WRONG: EMERY

Ottawa British Columbia marijuana crusader Marc Emery apologized yesterday for referring to federal Justice Minister Irwin Cotler as a "Nazi." Mr. Emery, who faces potential extradition to the U.S. for selling marijuana seeds, has compared the persecution of people involved in marijuana culture to that experienced by Jews under the Nazi regime. "I feel ashamed when my Jewish friends tell me they are ill at ease by my using the terms Nazi or Holocaust when referring to this issue or incident," Mr. Emery, who once wrote a biography of a Holocaust survivor, wrote yesterday on his web site, cannabis.com. It was in the "jail blog" that he wrote from a Saskatoon jail last summer that he called Mr. Cotler a "Nazi-Jew." In an interview last week, he reiterated that he thought Mr. Cotler was acting like a Nazi. Yesterday, he wrote that his view has now been turned around and he believes the Nazi vocabulary is not appropriate.

PETERBOROUGH - Police seized more than 14,000 marijuana plants from around a farmhouse 30 km northeast of Peterborough yesterday in one of the largest drug busts ever seen in the area.
"We're looking at 10 to 20 acres of marijuana, a trenched-out irrigation system, very rugged, very rough terrain. This land hasn't been farmed in years," said Det,-Sgt. Dean Steinke of Kawartha combined forces drug unit.
Police could reach the fields only by using all-terrain vehicles with a trailer to bring out the plants, which were loaded onto a large truck for disposal. Steinke said growers seem to be moving further north. The drugs inevitably lead to violence, he said.
"If you take all the marijuana that we have traced that has gone south, and all the cocaine that has come north, and you look at the violence and the gang wars that are going on in and around the province - the shootings, the killings, the deaths - it all has to do with one thing, and that's drugs."
Weapons are almost always found when police seize drugs like marijuana, Steinke said. "Our seizures of weapons, especially firearms has gone up over 100%," he said. "I think that's due to the fact there is so much competition in the market. People (growers) are actually protecting themselves from other people ripping them off."
Huge profits and little deterrence mean growers are not going to stop, Steinke said. "We know that our marijuana in the province of Ontario and Canada is mostly for export to the United States and what comes back is cocaine. And that's a real problem we have with young people." The suspects in a recent seizure of 40,000 plants in Bancroft were actually living in fox holes, he said. Pair in their 60s face pot smuggling rap

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - A man and woman in their 60s were each sentenced to more than two years in prison yesterday in a plot to smuggle 375 kilos of marijuana into the U.S. from Canada.
Gail Darwin, 62, of northern Minnesota and Joseph Heater, 65, of Ontario were each sentenced to 271/2 months in prison. Last month, they pleaded guilty to possessing 375 kilos of pot valued at $4 million US. Officials caught them this spring along the border with the drugs in a trailer ("STATESide", TORONTO SUN, Tuesday, August 30, 2005).

MORE THAN 300 marijuana plants firefighters found growing in and around a burning garage in Newcastle have been seized by Durham police. Fire crews put out the flames on Morgans Rd. around 2:45 a.m. Monday. Robert Vandewater, 56, and William Vandewater, 44, face drug-related charges (TORONTO SUN, Wednesday, August 31, 2005).

What follows is an editorial that appeared in yesterday's edition of London's The Daily Telegraph.

THE COMMUNISTS DID NOT GIVE GROUND EASILY

Among the veterans of the struggle against communism, the Poles stand in the front rank. Theirs was not the first organized resistance against the Red Army. The East Germans had risen in 1953, the Hungarians in 1956, the Chechs and Slovaks in 1968. And an especially honoured place must be set aside for the militiamen of the Baltic countries who, from forest hideouts, kept up a low-level insurgency against the Russian occupation right up to the 1970s. But it was Poland's Solidarity, the 25th anniversary of whose campaign we celebrate this week, that began the process by which Soviet communism was delegitimized and destroyed.
Dictatorships depend on two things: a degree of self-belief among the rulers and a measure of acquiescence among the ruled. In the early years of the Cold War, both factors were in place. A small cadre of communists, often veterans of the struggle against Hitler, felt that their role in that struggle was all the mandate they needed. They were surrounded by a much larger contingent of careerists and double-thinkers, who had little interest in the principles of Marxism-Leninism, but who knew that their positions depended on the maintenance of the ruling ideology.
By 1980, however, the moral bankruptcy of the system was impossible to disguise. A Pole had become Pope, and was intent on freeing his people from tyranny. He did so, not by criticizing Communism - he was far too canny for that - but by positing something better in its place. Poles responded to his vision of human dignity; and they yearned, too, for national independence and honour. To have extinguished that aspiration would have required a degree of murderous oppression for which the apparatchiks no longer had the stomach. They did not give ground easily, of course: it took 10 gruelling years, with stretches of internment and martial law along the way, before Lech Walesa replaced Wojciech Jaruzelski as president of Poland. But, in recovering their sovereignty, the Poles ennobled all nations and all peoples.

'A cheap form of publicity'

Marc Emery's defence of the use of Nazi imagery to illustrate the status of cannabis users does little to satisfy. His illogic can only lead reders to conclude that his decision to employ this tactic is designed more to sensationalize than to educate.
Mr. Emery defends his use of the analogy by offering a misleading definition: "A Nazi is a person who inflicts pain, punishment, incarceration or death on any human who is behaving peacefully and honestly."
While the Nazis did these things, the definition equally fits many forms of tyranny. The Nazis were the practitioners of a murderous ideology that aimed to create a new world order through the elimination of millions of individuals who were deemed to be unworthy of life. Nazism was an ideology of blood and death that, in the end, left nothing behind but blood and death. To call someone a Nazi is to link them explicitly to the practice of genocide.
Mr. Emery is not a stupid man. He knows all this. Therefore the only reasons he can have for engaging in such an egregious act of concept stealing is to gain notoriety for his cause. It is a cheap form of publicity that diminishes not only Mr. Emery but also those individuals who wish to influence the system to change the current laws regarding the use of cannabis.

OTTAWA * Marijuana crusader Marc Emery has found himself under fire this week as bloggers scrutinize the content of his Web sites, including a posting from his "jail blog" last summer in which he called federal Justice Minister Irwin Cotler a "Nazi-Jew."
With the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administrtion after him, the case of British Columbia's "Prince of Pot," has become a cause celebre. Since his arrest a month ago, he has been facing possible extradition to the United States for selling marijuana seeds to U.S. customers.
Supporters of Mr. Emery, who calls himself "the leader of the marijuana people around the world," include federal NDP leader Jack Layton, who has argued against extradition.
Mr. Emery, 47, was serving a three-month sentence in Saskatoon last summer for passing a joint at a pot rally when he wrote the "jail blog," which he dictated to associates over the phone, who then posted it on the Internet.
In it, complained that Mr. Cotler went form being a human rights advocate to a justice minister who, as attorney-general, allows for the prosecution of cannabis users.
"I thought the term Jewish-Nazi, or Nazi-Jew, was an oxymoron until Cotler became the Injustice Minister," Mr. Emery's posting said. "What a disgrace he is to his Jewish roots. He should - so much - know better."
In June, the content on his main Web site - http://www.cannabisculture.com, which he edits, publishes and uses to help sell millions of dollars worth of marijuana seeds - prompted NDP House leader Libby Davies to write to one of Mr. Emery's employees, Chris Bennett.
"I have been extremely disturbed by the tone and characterization of the Minister of Justice, Mr. Cotler, as a Nazi-Jew and the Gestapo," wrote Ms. Davies. who has tried to help one of Mr. Emery's associates, Renee Boje, who also faces potential extradition to the United States. "I have been advocating for Renee against the extradition and will continue to do so, but find the anti-Semitic characterization of Mr. Cotler based on his religious beliefs to be very offensive and completely counterproductive."
Four days after Ms. Davies' letter was posted to the site by Mr. Bennett, Mr. Emery - temporarily taking a view that the Nazi metaphor "disengages almost everyone" - said he had a better word for Mr. Cotler: "capo."
"If you're going to make comparisons," he advised, "the term for Irving Cotler might be 'capo'. These were the Jews during the Holocaust who were fated to deliver their fellow Jews to their death..."
In this case, Mr. Cotler would deliver his fellow Canadians to his American "masters," Mr. Emery's posting explained.
This month, a doctored picture of Mr. Cotler in a Nazi uniform, with a caption calling him a "neocon-kapo," was removed by one of the site's administrators after it had been posted by one of the regular participants of the site's discussion groups. Several bloggers, including smalldeadanimals.com, later began to draw attention to that posting and to Mr. Emery's "capo" comment.
On Monday, the same regular member on the cannabisculture Web site posted a cartoon that depicted an Israeli soldier shooting a Palestinian in the back. An Orthodox Jew an exaggeratedly large nose then says to the soldier, "Hush... We Don't Want to Wake Him Up" while gesturing toward a large, dozing, globeheaded figure labelled "world opinion." A man in a kaffiyeh, checking the pulse of the sleeping figure says "Wake Him Up? He's Dead..."
When Mr. Emery, who is out on bail, was asked by the Ottawa Citizen about this cartoon in an interview on Tuesday, he said that while he didn't endorse it, it was "probably legitimate political commentary."
On Wednesday, he changed his view, posting a statement above the cartoon saying: "This illustration is offensive to our Jewish friends and cannot possibly help our cause..."
An administrator banned the person who posted the cartoon from the site. Mr. Emery said when he originally used the term "Nazi-Jew" he as in a very emotional state.
"When you're in jail, you can be seized by despair," he said. Yet, he said that while he did not wish to be "insulting" to Mr. Cotler, ultimately he believes the Nazi metaphor is fair.
"To me a Nazi is a person who would inflict pain, punishment, incarceration or death on anyone who's acting peacefully and honestly," he said. Mr. Cotler, he said, fits into the category.
Mr. Emery said it is his respect and admiration for Jewish people that is behind his belief that Mr. Cotler should be held to a higher standard. "I have a great sensitivity to the Jewish pogroms and I'm very steeped in knowledge about them. I love studying Jewish history, cultural history. A lot of people have always thought I was a Jewish wanna-be," Mr. Emery said.
David Matas, chief legal counsel for B'nai Brith Canada, said it trivializes the atrocities of the Holocaust "to call everything that happens in this world with which you disagree Nazism."
At the same time, Mr. Matas said Mr. Emery's use of the metaphor, although "totally inappropriate," is not an act of anti-Semitism, a brand of hatred which, he said, is generally based on conspiracy theories.
"I don't think this guy is in that business," Mr. Matas said. He said, though, that Mr. Emery should restrict his criticism to Mr. Cotler's record and leave his religion out of it.
Mr. Cotler declined to be interviewed for this story. A spokesperson said because Mr. Emery is facing possible extradition, he does not want to risk prejudicing the case.

Zev Singer quotes me accurately, though not necessarily completely. For example, I said and and had written that "a Nazi is a person who inflicts pain, punishment, torture, incarceration or death on another human being who is acting peacefully and honestly." But Mr. Singer forgot the next line from my statement: "And who believes in an ideology that morally justifies inflicting pain, punishment, torture, incarceration or death for the good of the state." Otherwise, I appreciate Mr. Singer's initiative in bringing up the topic. It's a discussion that we ought to have. Is the roundup of the cannabis culture worldwide a holocaust? Remember, most of the world refused to believe the Jews of Europe were being placed in concentration camps, or that there were vicious pogroms against them, until it was far too late. There were thousands of Jews in concentration camps during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, yet no one boycotted those Olympics.
The world did not believe there was a holocaust in Cambodia and the world did not act. The world did not believe or act on the holocaust in Rwanda.
Twenty-four million people world-wide have been arrested for their belief in cannabis since 1955 and many millions of them have spent substantial time in jail. Much of the world does not want to believe there is a cultural genocide going on against the 164,000,000 people who, according to the UN last year, cherish marijuana in their lives. Yet everwhere on Earth today in 2005 we are hunted down, humiliated, arrested, jailed or even executed.
The perpetrators are "Nazis," even though they may call themselves something else. They want do destroy our people and have given the state sanction to do it.

Cops seize $2.6B of pot

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Agents have seized more than $2.6 billion US worth of marijuana plants in California this year, already surpassing last year's season total by 20% authorities said.
The state justice department's annual Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, or CAMP, is still a month away from ending after the season peak at the end of September.
The raids, many in remote, forested terrain, pit agents against often heavily armed guards protecting their marijuana plots (TORONTO SUN, Monday, August 29, 2005).

BRANDON, Man. (CP) - RCMP have charged a 46-year-old Toronto man in one of the largest outdoor marijuana grow operations ever found in Manitoba. Jai Qi Gu of Scarborough was charged yesterday after officers found about 13,200 plants on a farm west of Brandon. Six other men aged 18 to 57 are due to appear in court tomorrow ("CANADABriefs" TORONTO SUN, Wednesday, August 24, 2005).

Renegades' flashy Mardi Gras Madness is nixed

OTTAWA * Bowing to criticism that football games are no place for wanton displays of public nudity, the Ottawa Renegades will cancel their controversial Mardi Gras Madness promotion today.
Objections from city officials, the Canadian Football League head office and some fans have heaped pressure on Renegades president Lonie Glieberman, who previously had refused to kill the promotion that saw women bare their chests to collect beads from oft-inebriated male fans.
Mr. Glieberman said the contest was helping to attract younger fans, but reached yesterday in Michigan he confirmed he would make an announcement about Mardi Gras today via teleconference. Asked if he thought it would hurt improving attendance in the south-side upper-deck stands, he replied: "I'll be happy to answer that question tomorrow."
Adapted from Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans, the activity encourages women seated in the south-side upper deck to collect beads from men, which on Bourbon St. is achieved by flashing breasts. The woman with the most beads won $1,000.
Mr. Glieberman could not provide specific figures to compare to last season, but it is clear that attendance in the south-side upper deck has swelled this year, accounting for 60% of all walk-up sales for the last home game on Aug. 11.
Although nudity was originally intended, the club quickly revised its policy before the home opener in July. It said flashers would be escorted from the premises, which happened on several occasions through four home games amid jeers from patrons.
On at least one occasion, police officers and security guards were pelted with hot dogs and beads as they escorted a bead wearing young lady down the aisle.
Those offended by the promotion were allowed to exchange their tickets for seats in different areas of the stadium. According to Mr. Glieberman, no more than 100 customers have been relocated tlhis season, though security was beefed up at the last game.
In the past week, councillor Jan Harder of Bell-South Nepean has vowed to stop the promotion, while CFL commissioner Tom Wright has been in contact with Renegades majority owner Bernie Glieberman. Mr. Wright has said Mardi Gras "wasn't a personal favourite" on his.
Ottawa's Lansdowne Park has also issued the Renegades a letter expressing concerns about a new partying clientele, which manager Richard Hancock claimed put the safety of women, families and security personel at risk. The letter asked the Renegades to suspend the promotion.

From Desperate Housewives' deployment of digital nipple-erasers to Victoria's Secret's nipple-negating bras, a campaign is underway to conceal one of the natural features of the female breast. The producers of TV's Desperate Housewives have reportedly spent thousands of dollars digitally removing the nipples from images of actresses Teri Hatcher and Nicolette Sheridan. In discussing the show's so-called "nipple problem," series creator Marc Cherry tells the Philadelphia Daily News: "Certain actresses really don't like wear bras. And we try to accommodate them as much as humanly possible... So we've done a lot of blurring." Jeff Jarvis, founder of buzzmachine.com and creator of Entertainment Weekly, jokingly calls it "the nipple clause." As in, "I have the right to have them, you have the right to airbrush them." A similar situation exists on Pamela Anderson's new TV series, Stacked. In an April interview on Howard Stern's radio show, the actress complained that network censors ordered her nipples be "taped down" during filming so as not to offend prime-time audiences. The bizarre trend isn't limited to celebrity skin. According to a spokeswoman for Victoria's Secret, one of the biggest complaints from the company's clients was "nipple show-through" in unlined bras. They responded by introducing the much-hyped Ipex, a bra with a contoured pad designed to prevent this problem. "Everything about it is radiculous," says Jarvis. "Today, even mannequins have nipples. JANE MEREDITH and Annabel Slaight knew they'd have to make a splash to save their beloved Lake Simcoe. The Keswick friends created the Ladies of the Lake, a calendar featuring 31 local women, from their 30s to their 70s, posing tastefully nude in scenes showcasting the lake through the seasons.
There's ice-fishing in January, tapping maple trees in March, swimming in August and kayaking in October - a carefully placed arm, leg, scarf, even a metal bucket concealing the women's nudity. "It's not as if it's the sort of thing that all of us do," said Meredith, 60, who appears in December. "Everybody had to take a deep breath and say, 'Here we go.' "You're standing there absolutely naked. "It takes a lot of courage," she said.
They've already pre-sold 8,000 of 13,000 calendars, selling for $15 each, and hope to raise $250,000 for a conservation project of the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition.
Despite the playful pictures, shot by photographer Jim Panou, Meredith said the calendar highlights the serious threat to the lake by chemical fertilizer runoff, which is feeding the weeds and algae that then choke the waters. "This is a good way to catch people's attention," Meredith said. "It might not have happened had we not taken some drastic measures," added Slaight, 64, who also appears in December.
Inspired by the Calendar Girls film, the Ladies of the Lake have grabbed attention around Lake Simcoe since the first frames were shot last September. Pefferlaw's Tammi Roberts, 36, posed on a streep, grassy embankment in a May picnic scene as traffic rumbled past on nearby Hwy. 12. "It was very, very busy." Roberts said with laugh. "I'm perched kind of precariously there. All I'm waiting for is someone to come by in a canoe."
