Bydlowska is a writer and blogger who was raised in Warsaw, transplanted to Woodstock, Ont., then made a comparatively shorter side-step to Toronto. "I was the girl who danced barefoot on tables or sometimes fell asleep with her shoes on, or sometimes lost a job or a relationship," Bydlowska writes early on in the book. "I was the type of tragic girl that boys would try to fix, or try to drink with although only until they'd had enough, and there I would be, moving apartments yet again only to move in with another boyfriend who claimed he'd be better at fixing me."...
With the taboo of substance abuse broken, Bydlowska also is able to batter through many other, smaller taboos, which means her memoir stands as an uncommonly perceptive chronicle of what it means to be an intelligent, urban parent trying to hold on to the rest of her life (Christopher Shulgan, "I'm drinking for two. Jowita Bydlowska's memoir is less about addiction than a rebel accepting her role as a parent", NATIONAL POST, Saturday, April 27, 2013).
Ms. Bydlowska, born in Warsaw, Poland, and transplanted to Woodstock, Ont., as a teenager, is building a career on spilling her guts - an essay published on Salon.com last August reveals her diagnosis of bipolar disorder (Sarah Boesveld, "Drunk Mom. Toronto writer Jowita Bydlowska is building a career on spilling her guts, starting with her alcoholic binge during her son's first year of life", NATIONAL POST, Saturday, April 27, 2013).
