On Thursday, the timing of the announcement hat the United States will recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights undermined the announcement's impact.
With Israel going to the polls in less than three weeks, the announcement felt like campaign trail hyperbole to benefit incumbent Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's re-election campaign. This diminished the political value of American recognition for Israel and ensured that few other countries, including Canada, would follow America's lead, further isolating and weakening American leadership.
Normally, the U.S. avoids overt partisan endorsements when its allies hold elections, but not for the Israeli election campaign of 2019. At the campaign's onset, President Donald Trump called Netanyahu a great leader, and then approved giant ads Netanyahu placed in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv picturing a photoshopped Netanyahu shaking hands with Trump. On Thursday, Netanyahu became the first national Israeli leader to escort a top U.S. official, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, on a visit to the Western Wall. Shortly after the visit, Trump announced via a tweet his intention to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights (Renan Levine, "Trump's Golan decision: good move, bad timing", NATIONAL POST, Tuesday, March 26, 2019).
