Orangeville's Tree Spirits
Many religions affirm that following death, a person's spirit lives on, perhaps even reincarnated as another being. Few, however, would suggest that the same holds true for trees - that is, until they go to Orangeville.
Orangeville began life as a mill town around 1829 when John Corbit arrived and found a small millstream engulfed by towering pine trees and wide, shady maples. Orange Lawrence came on the scene in 1844 and opened the post office, naming the town after himself.
The community remained a small mill village until two railway lines converged on the site. As the main street grew into an avenue of stately brick stores and an elegant town hall, maple trees were planted along the streets in the residential sections of town. In the last few decades, Orangeville's growth has accelerated, turning it into a booming bedroom community for cities like Toronto and Mississauga.
Those stately maples, however, have not been so lucky. Pollution from passing trucks and simple old age have brought them to the end of their years. Most communities would cut trees off at the base, yank out the roots and plant some newer, more exotic species that would be lucky to survive the salt of the winter. But not so in Orangeville.
The idea was Mayor Drew Brown's. While visiting Truro, Nova Scotia, Brown noticed that tree trunks were often carved into historical figures. He returned to his hometown and planted the notion that the town's doomed maples trees could enjoy, if not prolonged life, at least and "afterlife".
In 2002, the carvers began. The trees were cut down to 3 or 4 meters in height and seventeen renowned carvers, including Colin Partridge, Jim Menken, Walter vanderWindt and Peter Mogensen, began turning the lifeless trunks into eagles, Indians, dancers, fiddlers, bears, historic figures and tree spirits - this last the main subject of carver Colin Partridge. Almost three dozen carvings now line the streets of Orangeville.
Most line the north side of Broadway, the main street, west of downtown. Another cluster lines First Street north of Broadway. The remainder are scattered throughout the town. Much like the main street murals of Midland, Ontario, the dead trees of Orangeville have helped turn the town into one of Ontario's more unusual tourist attractions.
Add to that Orangeville's regular theatre productions and the scenic tour train, and the dead here have truly gained new life (Ron Brown, "Top 150 unusual things to see in Ontario", THE BOSTON MILLS PRESS, 2016).
