Polish servicemen formed a human shield to block off migrants as the crowd chanted "Germany!". Migrants started setting up camp last night near the frontier town of Kuznica. Aerial footage shared by the Polish defence ministry showed hundreds of tents and roadside fires on the Belarusian side. The Polish government said there were between 3,000 and 4,000 people on the Belarusian side of the border, and insisted the EU's external frontier was under an "organized attack." According to the Polish authorities, there have been 28,500 attempts to enter the country illegally via Belarus since August. Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarusian president, threatened to open the borders for drugs and migrants in May this year. "We call on Belarus to abide by international law. We have seen a surge of migrants trying to enter allied territory via Belarus. NATO continues to closely monitor the situation, which is putting pressure on our allies Lithuania, Latvia and Poland," the NATO official said. "The Lukashenko regime's use of migrants as a hybrid tactic is unacceptable." Russia, for the first time, publicly endorsed Belarus on Monday. "We have no doubt here that the Belarusian migration services are taking all necessary measures to keep the situation in the legal field," Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, told reporters, according to the Interfax news agency.
