So the question remains: self-regulation or government regulation?
Perhaps the best answer would lie in some combination of the two: an advisory group from the security industry that will provide an appropriate governmental body with on-going, practical guidance in formulating and enforcing regulations for the protection of the public (Bob Robinson, "Government Control Or Self-Regulation?", CANADIAN SECURITY, June/July 1997).
Educating people in the area of security would help to develop a desirable image and would attract bright enthusiastic people to the industry. As first year students in Law and Security, our education in security is as yet minimal until second year. Nither myself nor the other students were prepared for the magnitude of this industry.
One of the delegates commented in the Wrap-Up that there is still an undesirable label associated with security - "When you say security, people automatically associate your job with that of a security guard who is posted or walks the beat." And we have all been guilty of thinking this at one time. A Sheridan student suggested that the job title be changed to "Security Officer" in the college, it is more descriptive and perhaps more appealing (Heather Jackson, "Conference Information "Overwhelming"", CANADIAN SECURITY, June/July 1997).

"I don't mean to downplay the importance of technology in today's world," McLeod hastens to say. "But the human factor is critical and can't be replaced by any amount of high tech paraphernalia."...

Being "online" is being connected. We say effective people are "connected" referring to the network of colleagues they influence. Now, anyone with a PC is connected and can be as effective as they want to be. You have to agree - it's an exciting time to be alive (Brian Kent, "Online President's Message", CANADIAN SECURITY, August/September).
